Installment three: It’s a Jeep® for the new Millenium!
In nearly 60 years, a lot had changed for Jeep. However, even as the new millennium approached, one question remained the same: where would Jeep take you next? SPOILER: It’s Hawaii (and California).
The WJ Grand Cherokee was Jeep’s newest model at the time. This was the luxury Jeep, and included available features such as a fancy navigation system that used Global Positioning System satellite technology.
Quadra-Drive ™ was Jeep’s latest and greatest 4WD system, which could send up to 100% of available power to one front wheel, and be used on dry pavement.
The exclusive Quadra-Coil ™ suspension gave the WJ impressive on-road manners (for a Jeep).
The Limited’s interior was luxuriously equipped with leather seating, infrared climate control, and steering wheel audio controls.
The WJ had plenty of cargo room, aided by under-floor placement of the spare tire. There were plenty of trim combinations to choose from.
The XJ was nearing the end of the line by the year 2000. The 2-door model is mentioned, however, there are no pictures to be found
The Cherokee had to available 4WD systems, depending on the transmission. A skid plate and tow hooks were optional equipment.
Optional was the venerable AMC 4.0L I6 (known at this point as the Power Tech I-6) The Power Tech (AMC) 2.5L I-4 was standard equipment.
The Cherokee featured next-generation air-bags for the driver and front passenger. ABS was available on some models. There were plenty of trim combinations to choose from.
Newly refreshed for 1997, the TJ Wrangler can trace its roots back nearly 60 years at this point in time.
The TJ came standard with Command-Trac ® “Shift-on-the-fly” 4WD system. Engine options were similar to the XJ Cherokee.
The TJ could be hosed out after a long day on the trail (attempt at your own risk). There were plenty of trim combinations to choose from.
